Spinach Processing Line
Depicted route: Spinach puree base

A spinach purée route should define the accepted leaf and stem fraction, removal of soil and debris, and the required fibrous texture. Leaf-purée preparation and pressed green juice are different product objectives. Inspect spinach leaves, remove unsuitable material and wash to control soil and grit before size reduction. A pressed juice route separates fibrous residue; a vegetable purée retains more solids and needs its own texture trial. Leafy feed should be evaluated directly rather than borrowing a firm-root preparation design.
Raw material and product boundary
Product directions
- green juice ingredient
- vegetable purée development
Incoming material considerations
- Will baby leaves, mature leaves or substantial stem material arrive, and how should that mix influence washing and feeding?
- Does the buyer want a low-fibre green juice or a thicker purée ingredient, and what grit, stringy particles, colour and phase separation limits will govern trial acceptance?
- Define incoming state, variety, maturity, accepted defects and supply interruptions in the purchasing brief. A proposed line should be demonstrated with representative commercial lots rather than a single ideal sample.
Process flow: preparation to product
- 01
Inspect leafy supply
Equipment duty: Gentle receiving and inspection conveyor
Identify accepted leaves, stem inclusion and defects.
State the purchased edible fraction rather than comparing leaf-only and whole-bunch feeds as identical materials.
- 02
Separate soil and debris
Equipment duty: Leaf washer with controlled rinsing and drainage
Clean the accepted spinach fraction before size reduction.
Review sand and debris removal using the real incoming supply, not only visually clean demonstration leaves.
- 03
Trim and control drainage
Equipment duty: Inspection, trimming and drain section
Remove unwanted coarse material and present a consistent feed.
Water carried from washing changes the measured purée basis and should not be treated as leaf recovery.
- 04
Cut the leaves
Equipment duty: Leaf cutter or controlled feed pulper
Prepare the leafy material for the selected purée route.
Record cut condition and the accepted stem load because they affect coarse fibre and transfer.
- 05
Develop leaf purée
Equipment duty: Pulper-refiner and appropriate screen
Meet the declared fibrous texture and particle requirement.
A juice press would separate a different fraction; it should not replace the purée objective without a product change.
- 06
Connect the downstream process
Equipment duty: Covered vessel and suitable pump
Supply the developed leaf base to its specified treatment and package.
Any preparation conditioning and final preservation require defined, separately assessed purposes.
- 07
Specify preservation around the actual product
Equipment duty: Selected treatment unit, controlled transfer and process instruments
Confirm the measured product composition, particulate load and intended storage chain before the treatment and filling arrangement is selected.
The leaf purée base route needs its own validated process. A drawing, a heat-exchanger name or a successful extraction trial does not establish a safe treatment schedule or a finished shelf-life claim.
- 08
Fill, identify and verify the packed ingredient
Equipment duty: Compatible filler, packaging interface and lot-identification station
Match the approved ingredient to the selected package and handling conditions. Record the production lot and the conditions required by its defined distribution route.
The filling boundary belongs in the project specification: container format, product-contact interface, filling hygiene, storage and the downstream user’s receiving requirements must agree before commercial acceptance.
Equipment composition and selection
Gentle receiving and inspection conveyor
Control the incoming-material presentation before preparation.
Selection basis: Check actual lot condition, peak arrivals and the accepted size range. Provide a sample/reject point that can be operated without obstructing feed to the next machine.
Inspection, trimming and drain section
Soil removal and texture development.
Selection basis: Preparation, particle size and any conditioning step should be evaluated for the actual vegetable and product. Do not borrow a fruit-juice preservation schedule for a vegetable formulation.
Leaf cutter or controlled feed pulper
Create the agreed intermediate condition for downstream equipment.
Selection basis: Agree an acceptance sample, a measurable particle or separation target and a reject-handling method. Select contact parts and access arrangements after trials with representative material.
Product buffer and transfer system
Connect preparation, treatment and filling without assuming all sections run at the same rate.
Selection basis: Record viscosity, particle character, temperature envelope and expected stoppages. Confirm drainability, sampling points and how unaccepted or interrupted product is identified and handled.
Preservation, packaging and cleaning interfaces
Complete the declared process boundary.
Selection basis: The quoted scope should identify included instruments, services, containers, hygienic connections and validation responsibilities. An item list without these interfaces is not a complete line specification.
Packaging and storage interfaces
Specify whether the leaf purée base is supplied as a chilled, frozen, otherwise treated or aseptically handled ingredient, as applicable to the developed product. Package material, closure, fill conditions and distribution are a connected system. Any claimed ambient stability or shelf life requires product- and package-specific validation; the process introduction does not set treatment temperatures or holding times.
Information for an engineering brief
- Trial the actual leaf/stem composition and drainage condition, assessing coarse fibre and the final purée rather than a different pressed-juice product.
- Provide the intended finished-product specification, representative raw-material samples, daily operating pattern and seasonal peak load.
- Identify available utilities, factory layout, drainage, reject collection and the exact inlet/outlet conditions of equipment supplied by others.
- Agree trial acceptance criteria and define the preservation, filling, cleaning and commissioning responsibilities before finalising the equipment scope.
Quality, cleaning and separate streams
Quality observations
- Assess grit, stem fragments, coarse fibre, colour and consistency. Record leaf/stem composition and drainage condition with the trial samples.
- Define the sampling location, sample preparation, measurement method and acceptable variation. Retain traceable comparisons through the intended downstream route; a favourable immediate sample is not proof of storage stability.
Separate material streams
- Collect basal trim, unwanted stems, soil-bearing rejects and coarse fibrous material separately. Keep wash-water carryover visible in the product balance.
Cleaning and changeover
- Leaf fragments and fibres can remain around cutter contacts, screens and transfer joints. Separate soil-removal cleaning from the clean purée circuit and verify access to retained residues.
- Assign cleaning responsibilities to the open preparation zone and the closed product circuit separately. Confirm which parts require removal or inspection and how cleaning effectiveness will be demonstrated with the actual product soil.
Spinach and apple juice
Where this route differs from the site's primary line
An apple line separates extraction, clarity and concentration into different decisions. The same distinction is useful here: first define the edible feed and the product to be recovered, then specify any refinement, concentration and packaging. The sequence below describes this material rather than assuming that an apple press or clarification setting transfers unchanged.
Vegetable products may be juice, purée or sauce. Soil removal, fibrous tissue and product-specific preservation can dominate the brief even when the downstream duties resemble an apple line.
Questions about this processing route
Is spinach purée the same as green juice?
No. Purée retains an edible leafy fraction, whereas pressing separates a liquid and a fibrous cake. The product objective should determine the equipment and acceptance sample.
Can washing water be ignored in a leaf-product balance?
No. Define the drained inlet condition and record carried water. Otherwise changes in washing or drainage can appear incorrectly as changes in recovered leaf product.
What should a useful spinach trial establish?
Trial the actual leaf/stem composition and drainage condition, assessing coarse fibre and the final purée rather than a different pressed-juice product. Record incoming material, accepted feed, finished ingredient and each reject stream separately. Keep settings, samples and analytical methods with the trial record so the result can be compared with subsequent seasonal lots.
