Apple Roller Sorting Machine

Singulate and grade whole apples by diameter so the crusher, press and inspection step see a more consistent feed.

THE PROCESS DUTY

Separate fruit by size and present it individually for inspection or the next process.

A roller sorter uses gaps or roller spacing to separate apples by diameter while moving them along the line. It can improve inspection by singulating fruit and can direct different size fractions to different destinations. It does not measure internal quality, sugar content or hidden defects; those require separate inspection or analytical methods.

IN THE LINE

What comes before.
What comes after.

The equipment is only useful when its feed and discharge are defined. These adjacent duties are the first interfaces to review.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

How the machine works.

The explanation starts with the material and the process, not a catalogue description.

01

Grading is a geometric decision

Roller gaps or channels separate fruit according to diameter and, to some extent, shape. The result is a size fraction, not a quality grade. Define what each fraction is for before choosing the number of lanes or discharge points.

02

Singulation improves inspection

When fruit moves one layer deep and rotates on rollers, operators can see more of the surface. This supports manual removal of visible defects. It does not replace a defined acceptance standard or a record of what was removed.

03

Consistent feed helps downstream equipment

A more uniform fruit size can make crusher feeding and press loading more predictable. It can also reduce the chance that very small fruit bypasses inspection or very large fruit stalls a transfer. The benefit depends on the actual downstream equipment.

04

Plan the fractions and bypass

Every grade needs a destination. Decide whether smaller or larger fruit goes to the same crusher, a different product, a reject bin or a bypass. The layout should keep the streams separate and accessible.

WHERE IT FITS

Good fit when...

  • Lines with a wide apple size range
  • Projects needing singulation before manual inspection
  • Processes where different fruit sizes require different handling

WHAT TO WATCH

Not the right answer when...

  • Uniform fruit supplies with no grading objective
  • Projects expecting size grading to detect internal defects
  • Layouts without space for multiple discharge streams

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

The machine is configured,
not picked from a shelf.

These are the choices that change the equipment scope. The approved datasheet fixes the final selection.

01

Roller spacing

Fixed or adjustable spacing selected around the size thresholds and fruit shape.

02

Lane arrangement

Single or multiple lanes to match the inspection team and downstream feed width.

03

Discharge points

Side transfers or end discharges for each size fraction, with clear destinations.

04

Rotation drive

Roller rotation to present the fruit surface without excessive tumbling.

05

Inspection lighting

Lighting and access positioned for visible defect detection and safe reject removal.

SELECTION FACTORS

What actually changes
the recommendation.

Bring these points to the equipment discussion. They are more useful than a single throughput number.

01

Size range

The spread between smallest and largest fruit determines the number of grading steps.

02

Purpose of grading

Inspection, crusher feed, product separation or a combination of these.

03

Throughput and lane count

The number of lanes should match the achievable inspection rate, not only the conveyor speed.

04

Discharge layout

Each fraction needs a safe, accessible route to its next destination.

TECHNICAL FAQ

Questions buyers
actually ask.

If your question depends on the fruit, product or site, include the conditions in the enquiry rather than relying on a general answer.

Send a project enquiry
Does a roller sorter grade quality?

No. It grades primarily by size and can improve visual inspection by singulating fruit. Internal quality, maturity, sugar content and hidden defects require other methods. Do not present size grading as a quality guarantee.

Where should a roller sorter be installed?

Usually after washing and before crushing or a final inspection step. The exact position depends on whether the sorter is used for inspection, crusher feed control or product separation. Keep the discharge streams accessible.

Can it handle different apple varieties?

Varieties differ in shape and rolling behaviour. The roller spacing and lane arrangement should be checked against the actual varieties and size range. A trial with representative fruit is more useful than a single average diameter.

Is a roller sorter necessary for every line?

No. It adds value when size variation affects inspection, crushing or product separation. A uniform fruit supply with a clear feed may not need it. Decide from the process objective, not from a catalogue list.
