Apple Juice Screw Press

Use a screw press for compact, continuous apple juice extraction where mash feed, screen condition and pomace discharge are controlled.

THE PROCESS DUTY

Extract juice by moving mash along a screened screw under increasing pressure.

A screw press conveys mash along a screen cylinder with a rotating screw. As the available volume decreases, pressure rises and juice passes through the screen while pomace exits at the end. The arrangement is compact and continuous, but screen condition, screw wear, mash structure and feed consistency strongly affect juice solids and stable operation.

IN THE LINE

What comes before.
What comes after.

The equipment is only useful when its feed and discharge are defined. These adjacent duties are the first interfaces to review.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

How the machine works.

The explanation starts with the material and the process, not a catalogue description.

01

The screen defines the juice path

Juice passes through screen slots while the screw conveys solids. Slot size, open area and screen condition determine how much solids enter the juice and how easily the press drains. A worn or damaged screen can change both.

02

Pressure builds along the screw

The screw geometry and the restriction at the discharge create pressure. The setting should match the mash and the desired pomace condition. Excessive restriction can raise solids in the juice or overload the drive; too little restriction may leave juice in the pomace.

03

Feed consistency matters

A screw press performs best with a steady mash feed. Surging or uneven mash structure changes the pressure profile and can produce variable juice and pomace. Coordinate the crusher, buffer and feed device.

04

Wear parts and cleaning set availability

Screens, screws and seals wear. Access for inspection, replacement and cleaning should be designed into the installation. Residual mash and juice in the press need a defined cleaning route.

WHERE IT FITS

Good fit when...

  • Compact continuous extraction where floor space is limited
  • Small to medium production windows with a consistent mash feed
  • Projects that can manage juice solids in downstream finishing

WHAT TO WATCH

Not the right answer when...

  • Mash with hard foreign material that can damage the screen
  • Processes without access for screen and screw maintenance
  • Projects expecting a screw press to produce clear juice directly

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

The machine is configured,
not picked from a shelf.

These are the choices that change the equipment scope. The approved datasheet fixes the final selection.

01

Screen

Slot size and open area selected around the mash and acceptable juice solids.

02

Screw and cone

Geometry and discharge restriction matched to the feed and pomace target.

03

Feed device

A controlled mash inlet that avoids surging and air pockets.

04

Juice collection

Collection trough and transfer arranged to avoid foaming and solids accumulation.

05

Washdown access

Removable screens or openings for cleaning and wear inspection.

SELECTION FACTORS

What actually changes
the recommendation.

Bring these points to the equipment discussion. They are more useful than a single throughput number.

01

Mash structure

Fine or fibrous mash behaves differently in a screw press.

02

Juice solids tolerance

Downstream clarification or screening must handle the solids the press passes.

03

Wear and maintenance

Screen and screw replacement affect operating cost and availability.

04

Floor space

The compact footprint may suit retrofits, but access still needs space.

TECHNICAL FAQ

Questions buyers
actually ask.

If your question depends on the fruit, product or site, include the conditions in the enquiry rather than relying on a general answer.

Send a project enquiry
Does a screw press produce clear apple juice?

No. A screw press produces pressed juice with some suspended solids. Clear juice requires a separate clarification and filtration sequence. The press screen affects the solids load but does not replace finishing.

Why is my screw press juice cloudy or full of fines?

Screen wear or damage, slot size, excessive pressure, mash that is too fine and feed surging can all increase solids. Inspect the screen and review the mash and pressure settings before changing the downstream process.

Can a screw press run continuously?

It is a continuous device, but it still needs a steady feed and planned cleaning. The operating window should include start-up, shutdown, screen inspection and cleaning. Continuous does not mean maintenance-free.

Is a screw press cheaper to run than a belt press?

Operating cost depends on wear parts, water, cleaning, labour and energy at the actual duty. A compact screw press may use less space, but screen and screw replacement can matter. Compare total operating requirements, not only the purchase price.
